Tile Coasters

 

I have made several of these tile coasters for friends, and now I am starting to make more to sell at my upcoming Craft Fairs.  I found out that the rough tiles that are unsealed work best when using ink.  If you want to make some with a paper covering than you can get a smooth, already sealed tile.  I have made several with Designer Series Paper and will post at a later date.

 

As you can see, the tiles come in several colors.  I purchased them at a local hardware store.  I wiped them clean, to get the dust off because they are unsealed.  I then used Jet Black StazOn Ink and stamped my images.  You need to use StazOn Ink so the images don't run when they get wet.  After they were all stamped I arranged them on a baking sheet and baked them in my oven at 350  for about 20 minutes.  This is just an extra step to set the ink, even though when I tried to clean one that I made a mistake on right after I stamped it I couldn't get the image off. So, I don't know if you really have to follow this step, but I am either giving them as gifts, or selling them at craft fairs so I want to take extra precaution so they don't run.

 

When you take them out of the oven they are very hot, so after they cooled I sprayed them with a Matte Sealer that you can purchase at a hobby or hardware store.  I sprayed two coats, waiting about 1/2 hour before applying the second coat.  I added round felt pads to the bottom and then I tied them with ribbon in groups of 4.  I will add tags depending on the occasion.  

 

A nice gift for a coworker, teacher, newlywed, or friend, and they make a nice housewarming gift too.
